Out-of-plane deformation reduction via inelastic hinges in fibrous metamaterials and simplified damage approach

The mechanical behavior of fibrous metamaterials is mainly determined by the interactions between fibers composing architecture. These are usually two different kinds: those directly depending on positions and that need mediators, consisting hinges, either inelastic or perfect, inducing restrictions kinematics fiber joints. In cases interest, it has been observed hinges can have a certain torsional stiffness behave as perfect joints, simply ensuring remain interconnected, but not applying any constraint relative rotations them. Here effect studied in shear tests for selected metamaterial. It shown be tailored to avoid, at least reduce, out-of-plane deformations. Moreover, that, after reaching threshold, permanent deformations observed. This phenomenon treated simplified way, introducing damage continuum model.
